Capcom's Move to Enigma DRM: Is the Controversy Overblown?

Capcom, the renowned video game publisher, has recently made a significant shift from the Denuvo anti-tamper technology to the Enigma DRM for their highly acclaimed game, Monster Hunter Rise. This move has triggered a range of reactions within the player community, with some praising the less intrusive nature of Enigma DRM, while others express dissatisfaction due to an unintended compatibility issue with the Steam Deck.

Contrary to circulating rumors, the Enigma DRM does not appear to be a major obstacle for most mods in Monster Hunter Rise, except potentially those reliant on DLL injection. Despite this, a faction of PC gamers has targeted Capcom games featuring the Enigma DRM, creating what some perceive as a witch hunt. This reaction seems exaggerated when considering that mod incompatibility with game updates is a common occurrence across various games, not just those utilizing Enigma DRM.

In response to the controversy, the creator of the Fluffy Mod Manager, a respected tool for modding Resident Evil games, has clarified that Enigma DRM does not hinder modding. This clarification highlights the disproportionate backlash within the gaming community.

Taking a broader perspective, the discussion extends beyond Capcom's use of Enigma DRM to a more general discourse on Digital Rights Management (DRM). It's essential to recognize that all games on Steam inherently include Steam DRM. The only games without DRM are those available on GOG. Therefore, concerns about Capcom's adoption of Enigma DRM may be deemed somewhat misplaced, given the widespread presence of DRM systems in digital gaming distribution platforms.
